This has always been a favorite in my family. My Mom loves to experiment with these too by changing out the types of cake mix and chocolate chips for M&M’s. Have fun with these…
Ingredients
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- 1 small box instant vanilla pudding
- 1/4 cup water
- 3/4 cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup chocolate chips
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. (The batter will be rather thick.)
- Pour into a greased 9×13 baking dish and bake for 20 to 30 minutes. (The batter should still be shaky and might appear not completely cooked, but this recipe yields a gooey cookie bar. If you prefer a more firm cookie, cook 10 minutes more.)

Made these with banana pudding. Turned out great! Now I found Carmel pudding, that’s the next one I’ll try and pistachio pudding also. So easy!
So glad they turned out great for you! In terms of pudding flavors, the opportunities are endless!

This cookie bar has been a hit on tow boats as well as in my Culinary classroom! Thank you for this wonderful recipe!!!!!!
Love hearing things like that!! 🙂 Thanks for making my day!

made these today and they are divinely delicious…going to take some to work for Monday and I have a feeling that these will disappear in no time..
Ha! Thanks, Annabelle! I’m so glad you like them!

Why does the picture show m&ms and the recipe doesn’t ask for them?
The post explains that sometimes we swap out the chocolate chips for M&Ms.

Oh, and, I did bake mine for the ten extra minutes. Our oven gets an attitude about baked goods sometimes; lol. So I just need to bake stuff a little longer than usual from time to time to make sure everything’s done in the middle. They turned out perfect after forty minutes at 350.
LOL! Great!

Made these tonight and they were great! Will be sharing some with our neighbor for dog-sitting one of our labs for a while this weekend. Love the idea of trying different cake mix/pudding mix combinations, too. I will definetly make thse again. Thank you. Love your site.
Thanks, Jen! So glad you enjoyed them!!!

Does Stacey still answer questions on these comments? Would like to hear if possible. I will shop for this in the morning early. I love everything people have said. Merry Christmas to all. Alice

I just preordered your cookbook via B&N and will send envelope for signed book plate. I am so excited even though I don’t do much cooking at all. Thank you so much. Have a joyous Christmas and Merry Christmas Eve! Alice
Thanks, Alice!! I sure do appreciate your support!

Hi, Stacey. I love the simplicity of this recipe as I see it. Are All ingredients as listed combined, mixed, by hand until totally mixed, including eggs? Sounds like the thick batter might be a little hard to mix but just might take me a little longer mixing. I will look tomorrow and see if I can get the holiday m&m s and then bake Tuesday or wed to take with me two hours away Wednesday. Hopefully will not become hard. Thank you. I guess you will answer to my email? I had a hard time getting to this via FB posting by someone. Merry Christmas!
Yes ma’am! It’s all mixed by hand. I do try and reply to every comment, it just takes me a but longer these days. Never hesitate to let me know if you have questions! Merry Christmas!

Oh my goodness, Stacey, it was the easiest and fastest to prepare! And my house smells so good! I used a heavy duty aluminum pan and lightly cut into squares. Hopefully after cooling, aluminum foil will keep them totally fresh and delicious when I get there tomorrow. For someone with rotator cuff and tiring arm, this was truly so easy and fast! I am tickled pink to have a recipe like that I can make up so quickly! Thank you ever so much and Merry Merry Christmas!
Also, these should stay nice and soft for 2 to 3 days. 🙂

I love this recipe! I’ve tried it with lots of cake mix/pudding flavor combinations. I used red velvet cake mix and cheesecake pudding, lemon cake mix and pudding mix and butter pecan cake mix and banana pudding. It always works and it’s so fun to try different combos!
Sounds delish!! Great ideas!

That’s a great idea! When I saw the recipe, I thought, nah. The best thing about cc cookies (besides the chips) is the brown sugar, but if I added any, it would be too sweet, but using the butter pecan pudding should fix that. Thanks!

Can you use “pudding in the mix” cake mix in lieu of cake mix & pudding mix? Or can you use both together? Or must it be a plain cake mix and a pudding mix?
Hi Marianne, I use both even if the cake mix says it has it in it.
Genia
any idea on how many calories are in these babies?
Pam
Can you freeze these after you bake them?? I would think you could.
HI Pam! I’ve never done that, but I bet they would freeze okay. Let me know if you try it.
candice
Do u mix the cake ingredients also or just the mix
Just the mix. 🙂

Thanks!!!!

how many bars on average does 1 batch make, cut on the smaller side ?? in a 9 or 10 x 13 baking dish ??
When they are cut kind of small, you can get about 24 to 30 – depending on size.

Oooh! I use to make this without the vanilla pudding and it was good… but I bet with the pudding it would be outstanding! Thanks for posting, I had forgotten the ingredient amounts and sort of given up on that recipe but now I am eager to try it again!!
Wonderful, Therese! I hope you’ll give these a try!

I made these yesterday and they were a hit! My house smelled sooooo good as they were baking. I baked for 25 minutes and that time was perfect.

is the cooking time correct on this mine isn’t anywhere near done.
Yes. With any baking the times can vary based on variations in oven temp, dish size, or dish type. This time is based on using a glass dish. The cookies should be pretty gooey, but you can continue to bake them until you feel they are to your liking. Be cautious about baking too long though, they’ll turn into bricks. A toothpick test won’t work well on this recipe.

I’m sure you make the pudding, but I want to make sure? Do I make the pudding or just put the pudding Mix!? Help!!!
No, don’t make the pudding. Just mix it in with the other ingredients as the dry powder.
rjonda
Thank you!!!
