The long awaited update is here! We’re so excited to give you a peek into the progress of turning the Chinaberry House into a home.

Hey, y’all! We are so excited to finally give you a peek inside the project that has literally consumed nearly every waking hour of the last 14 months – The Chinaberry House. If you’ve missed my previous posts about our home, jump back and get caught up.
We knew we were in for a some challenges building during a pandemic, but I don’t think we knew just how much time we’d be investing in the last minute details. As a result, I just haven’t had as much time to give y’all updates as we’ve finished things up like I had hoped.
Regardless of all that, we are officially moved in and are working hard to turn the bricks, boards, and sheetrock, into a home.

So, we took some time this week to go around and take a few shots to show y’all where we are. These exterior images aren’t great, but it’s been more than 100ยฐ here for the last week, so it’s the best I could manage without having a heat stroke out there… ๐๐ฅต
As I walk you through the house, I’m going to try to include notes about paint colors, flooring selections, etc., but if you have a question about something, feel free to ask it in the comments below.

We’re so happy with how the exterior of the house turned out. The original plans called for more of a modern farmhouse aesthetic, and while we liked that, we feared that it might feel a little outdated in a few years. So we made some changes to give the outside more of a classic look. That included different colors, additional brick, and deleting some of the details that seemed to lean too far towards farmhouse.

From the backyard, you can see the screened porches and a glimpse at the test kitchen at the far right.

Stepping inside the center set of double doors on the front, you walk into the living room. It’s really more of a great room as the living room, dining room, and kitchen are all open to one another. We were told a few times in this process that open concepts like this are going out of style, but we didn’t care. We knew this would work well with our family. We’re rebels like that.
The 20-foot ceilings in this room really give it a massive feel. We’re working hard to furnish the space to give it a cozy feeling, despite that.

We knew that we’d need new furniture for the living room. But being that you would be able to see the back of the couch as soon as you walk in the door, I wanted something that was attractive from all sides. When we saw the Connor Sectional from Universal Furniture, we knew the curved back was what we were looking for – functional and nice to look at. The couch and Soho Accent Chairs were custom orders from Universal. The sofa is done in their Silex Flax fabric. The Soho Accent Chairs are in the Espresso finish with the Ant Farm Batik fabric.
The mantels and large beams going into the kitchen are a feature we really love. They’re both from a barn built in the 1800s in central Alabama. We sourced those from the great folks at Southern Accents Architectural Salvage. They even did the work to get them sanded, stained, and sealed for us so they’d perfectly match our space.

The walls in nearly all of the house are painted the same color – Mindful Gray. It’s a gray with tan undertones. We saw it and instantly knew it was what we wanted. The thing we love about it is it looks different in the different rooms and at different times throughout the day as the sun changes. You can really see it in the above pictures. The walls look different colors, but they’re all the same paint.

Even though the rooms all open to one another here, we wanted the dining room to have a separate feeling. And being that there’s not much wall space to be able to paint it a different color, we just decided to paint the ceiling a different color instead. And we LOVE it! The color is called Restorative and it’s from Sherwin Williams Home.
We love all the big windows and the light they give this space but are finding that the sun setting in the evenings on that side of the house makes it a little hard to sit at the table, so we’re exploring a few different options in terms of windows coverings/blinds to be able to diffuse some of that harsh sunshine without having to cover the windows during the rest of the day.
Now, Let’s talk about the kitchen…

From the very first discussion, I knew what I wanted in a kitchen – lots of bright white, a window over the sink, a huge island with seating, and lots of light.
And this is all that. The large double doors open to one side of the front porch and the three windows on the other side look out onto the master porch, so we get lots of light in this room.

The stools we chose are the Delta Brass Counter Stools from Crate and Barrel. They were pricey, but we had something very particular in mind and these were the only thing that came close.

And I just had to include a detail picture of this. Apparently, it’s super popular to have a large white bowl with moss and an orchid on your kitchen island. Well, we were looking for something similar, but knew we didn’t want to be like everybody else. So when I walked into an antique store and saw this Clabber Girl baking powder gallon can, I knew it was perfect. It accomplishes our goal and adds a fun nod to the whole thing that got us here. It even still had baking powder in it!

When it came to appliances, I knew I was going to be pretty picky. So, I started meeting with the excellent team at AllSouth Appliance months before we even started drawing up plans.
I wanted something that had more of a professional look, that could take a beating, and also wouldn’t break the bank.
We had it narrowed down to a few options, but ultimately went with GE Monogram – for a few reasons. It’s American made, we loved the french door on the top of the double oven, it has brass accents – which we knew we were incorporating throughout the house, and I had been fortunate enough to tour the GE factory in Louisville Kentucky a few years back and got to experience the detail that goes into the making of these appliances. Sure, nothing is going to be perfect, but we’ve been very happy with this choice.

Here’s our big farmhouse sink and those pretty, pretty windows!

We wash a LOT of dishes in our house. So we opted for two dishwashers. But we didn’t really have tons of cabinet space to sacrifice, so rather than two full-size dishwashers, we went with one full-size dishwasher and a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher drawer. That large drawer in the island on the left side is actually a pull-out dishwasher drawer. Full disclosure: I absolutely love this thing, but we’ve had some problems with it. But the folks at Fisher & Paykel and my friends at AllSouth have been working diligently to get it all figured out.
For refrigeration, we went with an 18-inch column fully integrated Monogram freezer and a 24-inch fully integrated column fridge. As many folks are seeing the same problem, it took quite a while to get all our appliances in. The stainless panels for these pieces just arrived a few weeks ago.

Now on to what’s probably my favorite room in the house – the pantry! I know, I’m crazy. But look at it!
When we finalized the kitchen design, we knew we weren’t going to have tons of upper cabinet space. So we decided to sacrifice some master closet space to bump out and expand the pantry. Doing this gave us more of a butler’s pantry with counter space and tons of storage. We keep small appliances we use frequently right on the countertop and have others, like slow cookers, stowed away.

We also added a small sink since we make coffee in here and added a small wine cooler. We also opted to put the microwave in this space to keep it off the counters and to keep it from taking up valuable cabinet space in the kitchen.

Heather insisted that I show y’all the laundry room. I don’t know anyone that particularly loves doing laundry, so she wanted something bright and colorful in here to make it more fun. I think she definitely accomplished that goal. And while we got a few strange looks when we told folks about the cabinet color, I think it looks great!

When it came to the master bedroom, we wanted something peaceful, simple, but colorful. All of the furniture in this room was the same at our old house, but to make this room special we added the feature wall behind the bed. This is another one of those splurges that we really like and that we feel makes our home special. We worked with some absolutely amazing trim carpenters who made our OCD hearts happy. These squares are just perfect! ๐

Now to the master bath…
This space probably got more thought than any other space – except for maybe the kitchen. We really wanted this space to be a retreat with a spa-like feel. I think we got it!
There are a few splurges in this space – and we regret none of them. Especially this tub…
This is the Ashley Cast Iron Double Ended Skirted Tub from Vintage Tub and Bath. This deep soaker tub is absolutely perfect.

For the flooring, tub surround, and shower, we went with varying sizes of the Maravilla Bianco Orion Marble Tile from Floor & Decor. It requires a little more maintenance than a standard porcelain tile, but it looks great and helped us achieve that spa feeling.

After staying at a beach condo that had shower body jets, I knew I had to have them in our shower. Those combined with a rainfall shower head, a handheld sprayer, and a large corner seat make this shower really hard to get out of in the mornings.
So there you have it. A little sneak peek into the Chinaberry House. We’re still pinching ourselves to prove that we actually do live here.
It’s been a long journey, but one that we’re so blessed to have been able to be on. We appreciate the love, kindness, and support you’ve all shown us through this process. And I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. We wouldn’t be in this spot in life, if it wasn’t for the folks that come back to visit with us at SouthernBite.com each week. We love y’all and are sure grateful for the opportunities that we’ve been afforded simply by starting a little food blog.
And we’d be remiss, to not mention our amazing builder, Ben Byrd with Byrd Builders. Ben was a master at guiding us through the building process in such an unusual time. God put Ben and his wife Shanna in our lives at just the right time and were instrumental in making our dreams a reality. Through all the last minute changes, middle-of-the-night texts, answering the same question multiple times, budget challenges, and supply chain issues, Ben never said no. He always found a way to make it work. We’re fortunate that Ben and Shanna aren’t just our builders, but are now our friends.

Up next? A look into the Chinaberry Test Kitchen! Y’all stay tuned!
StephAnie
I have this plan saved and you made several of the changes and choices that I already had in mind (the pantry and dining area). Thank you for sharing the photos as they really help me visualize it all. The flooring you have in the living and the kitchen is wood, right? I had been planning to opt for wood-look tile so that it would be easy to mop. How do you mop your wood floors? The color you chose is even what I would choose, but I would be nervous having actual wood floors since I find them harder to deep clean!
I’m so glad you found it helpful! We’ve sure loved living here. Yes, the floors in the main living area and kitchen are engineered wood. The dark color does show dirt easily, so we use a Bona mop for wood once a week or so and use regular mop about every 6 weeks or so.

Stacy,
I adore your new home! And I agree, the yellow cabinets in the laundry room are great! Also, I love your new website.
One more thing. Do you plan to offer cooking classes on site? I live in Kansas but I’d make the journey to attend some classes from you!
Thanks for all you do!

The first and last thing I love the most is the used brick in the kitchen.
Everything is so out of this world gorgeous.
I have a piece of property at Ocean Shores near the ocean and water front on the grand canal. I just want a tiny shack with everything old and rustic and hope to use my old bricks like you did.
I love it all and you should be very proud of it all
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your new heaven.

Your home is perfection, but the master bathroom really caught my fancy. Were there 3 sinks, 2 on the long counter & 1 by the shower? If so, Iโve never seen that before. Just curious! =^..^=
No, just the one on each side.

I have prayed for your home since the beginning. I am Praising The Lord through all the photos. Yโall are so blessed. I havenโt been on much because I had a really bad Sinus Infection and bronchitis and was in bed for almost 2 weeks and it has taken a month to kick it out of my system and to feel human again.
Yโall HaAbe an amazing home , we may be moving in the near future and you have giving me so many ideas with color. But there will be no brown except for the hardwood floors and doors maybe. lol the house I am in now is all brown except my bedroom and it was a gift from my children.
I Praise the Lord for Yโall and your home and I Pray you will have your Pastor come and Bless all of the beautiful creation God allowed Yโall to have. Amen and Amen๐๐ปโฅ๏ธ๐๐ปโฅ๏ธ๐๐ปโฅ๏ธ๐ป๐น๐บ๐ท๐ธ๐ I absolutely love Southernbite.com.

In the house my husband and I had previously our living room also had the beam on the ceiling with a ceiling fan and the large brick fireplace. We loved it.

WOW! Everything looks wonderful and I know you and your family are loving finally moving into your dream home. I love the big ceiling fan in the great room. When you get a moment, could you share more info on that as I think it is the perfect size for our great room. Thank you.
Of course! We absolutely love it!
