Mom’s Chicken and Gravy

It’s tradition that nearly every Sunday, we go to my parents’ house for supper.  It’s a great opportunity to see them and and spend time with them and a chance to eat my Mom’s cooking!   Now, I’ve told you before, my Mom cooked three meals a day when I was growing up and she is certainly the best cook I know, so any opportunity to eat her food is a real treat for me. So, last Sunday we get over to Mom and Dad’s house and I barely get in the door when she pulls me into the kitchen and says, “Look what I made!” She lifts the lid off of her electric skillet and revels the most mouth watering, delicious smelling chicken and gravy. My knees almost buckled! She puts put the lid back and and we talk about how long it has been since she made it, which is years I’m positive. Then, with a sheepish grin she says, “…and I took pictures of me making it. I want you to put it on your blog!” Y’all, that just tickled me pink!  She gets such a kick out of your comments when I post one of her recipes, I guess she wanted to get in on the game herself.  And I think that is just about as neat as it gets!

Soo happy to come across your Mom’s recipe! It’s a dish my Grandma would make when she passed suddenly all recipes were lost except a few I had memorized. This brought tears seriously thank you. I can’t wait to fix this tonight for my husband & son It’s been years I know they’re going to love it.

    1. I’m really touched to hear that my mom’s recipe brought back such special memories for you. It’s amazing how food can connect us to loved ones. I hope you and your family enjoy it together!

Made this today and it was super easy. Tasty too. I almost followed the recipe exactly, but with a few changes. I followed the recipe up to after frying the chicken. Then I put chicken in a slow cooker. Added the rest of the ingredients and cooked on high for 2 hours. Lowered to medium for another hour. I then mixed together 2 tbsps. corn starch and 2 tbsps. cold water and added that into slower cooker to thicken gravy. Cooked back on high until boiling. Reduced back to low for about another 30 minutes. Came out great! Made buttered wide egg noodles and candied carrots to go with. Recipe is a keeper!

  3. I’m not a big fan of brown gravy, although I will occasionally eat it. This recipelooks so good. Do you think the country gravy packet (white, cream) would work ok in this?

  5. My mom wised up one summer after she’d driven 90 miles round trip to gather tons of veges and fruit from their garden. She announced she would not be cooking til my dad came home.(He worked out of town and came home on Friday nights). We had sandwiches~a sin back then!! She not only kept our freezer full, she made sure friends and neighbors got some, too.

  6. Before my parents moved to a different state, we’d go to their house for dinner almost every Sunday. I eventually ended up moving there, after my dad went home to be with the Lord. By then my mom was not doing much cooking any more. She’s gone now, too. I miss her, but I know I’ll see them both again. My kids all live out of state. How I wish I could cook Sunday dinners for them!

  7. Mom’s Chicken and Gravy is fantastic. I was looking for a quick and easy chicken recipe and this one looked good. Chicken cooked perfectly without needing much of my attention. I had some mashed potatoes to soak up some of that gravy. it was pretty simple and the family loved it. I’ll be keeping this one for future use. Thanks Stacey

  8. this similar to the way my dad would make chicken and gravy. he made his own gray with the left over flour mixture which made it more of a blonde gravy. he would make it for Sunday dinner but it was always soooo much better on Monday. when i make it for my family i always need to make it the day before it is for our meal.great with mashed potatoes and fresh green beans-mmmmmm

  9. Stacey, I finally made your Mom’s chicken and it was delish. The hubby had been asking me to cook it, after I showed him the recipe. He is a happy man after that supper. My Mom has health issues so I share whatever I cook with them so they can just microwave a plate. I know they will love this too. So thanks to your mom and to you for sharing this great smothered chicken…..yum!

  10. Hi Stacey, I will be making this today!!! I love your recipes. I need your cookbook in my life:) I hope you ship internationally.

  11. This looks amazing. I cannot wait to try it. It is so cool that your Mom took pictures for your blog! She Rocks! I love alot of your recipes. Keep them coming please

  12. I tried the smothered chicken recipe for my pork chops tonight. Wow, it was awsome. I don’t fry a lot of foods but I love fried porkchops with homemade country gravy and mash potatoes and a veggie but I wanted to do something different. I wasn’t real sure about using the onion soup mix with a packaged brown gravy mix but not any more. I loved it and so did everyone else. I can’t wait to try it with a pot roast and vegetables. This was simple and easy. Thank you and your mother for the recipe.

  13. Thanks to you and your mom for posting this. My mother made the best chicken and gravy, but I never got her recipe. She has been gone 20 years and every once in a while I really crave it. I going to cook this Sunday and think of my mother. Thank again!

    Sarah Boothe

    1. Hi Sarah! Thanks for sharing that with us. I hope this recipe brought a little bit of your mother back to you and that you enjoyed it. 🙂

  14. I ended up having to go to the grocery store anyway so I used the brown gravy mix. I’m telling you this is sooo delicious. There is plenty of gravy for the chicken and I made rice and the gravy was delicious over the rice. A keeper for sure.

      1. Ok. We’re having this for dinner tonight and I can’t wait. I’m having rice and sautéed green beans with it. And tell your mom I have her peach cobbler in the oven and it smells divine.

  15. These photos are making me hungry. I came here via the Southern Plate, and I like what I am seeing. This brings back memories of having dinner at my parents home also. I enjoy reading your stories and recipes. Cant wait to try this recipe!

  16. I can’t wait to try your recipe. I am new to your site, saw it listed on Southern Plate. I have a question for you though. Could I brown the chicken, and then put it in a crockpot and then mix the soups and pour it over the chicken and let it finish cooking in the crockpot? I love my crockpot. Thanks for the great recipes!

  17. It’s only been 12 days since I first prepared this………. yet I’ve HAD TO FIX this dish four times already.

Excuse me, this is number five.

Let me tell you….. it’s great substituting pork chops and even better substituting a chuck roast…. just keep adding tiny amounts of water to the gravy and continue simmering until meat is tender. WOW.

Cardiac Alert: I don’t drain the grease and I make sure to incorporate the entire 1/2 cup of flour…. best gravy ever.

    THANKS!

    1. David – I am thrilled that you enjoyed this recipe so much! When I got the comment, I had to call Mom and read it to her. She was ecstatic! Thanks!

  18. That is so cool she wants you to share on your blog! My Mom makes the best fried chicken, and I think I’m finally getting the hang of it…:)

  19. Stacey, your Mom rocks!!!! Her food pictures make the recipe justice and right now I wish I had some of that chicken for it looks tempting and too delicous to eat. I can’t wait to make it. I will be going to the store tomorrow to get what I need to make it for dinner on Sunday. What 2 sides did you Mom serve with her chicken dinner? You are so lucky your Mom is still around to spoil you. No wonder you keep the tradition….LOL…

    1. I’m trying to remember what the sides were… the chicken was so good I forgot the other stuff. I think she had mashed potatoes and rutabagas and probably some other vegetable. I always love mashed potatoes with this gravy, so that’s a must. Good luck with the recipe!

  20. That sounds gorgeous and when I get back to cooking proper meals I’m going to try it. Would dumplings go well with it?

  21. OK, Stacey MOM, you ROCK !!!!

I’ve renamed your dish “Easy Chicken and Gravy”…. declared a keeper by 4 guest… great consistency, taste, and REALLY REALLY EASY to make…mmmmmm.

I have two other similar keepers with truly Southern fried chicken smothered and an easier that that one scratch version… but yours is the bomb – super easy and a super great taste.

Everyone should try this recipe, you won’t regret it.

Stacey you are one lucky dude. You should visit your Mom and Dad more often…. call first to see what they are serving.

    1. I visit them every chance I get. You can see that having food like this growing is why I look the way I do! I’m am thrilled that you and your guests enjoyed it so much.

  22. My Mom made hers similar, but browned onions with the chicken instead of the onion soup mix, then added chicken broth. She made her gravy from that. I remember her big blue bowl of gravy with biscuits soaking on top, tender, fall-apart chicken, mashed potatoes and veggies for Sunday dinner. Mmmmmmm! Good chicken, good memories.

  23. Thank you for this delicious looking recipe. I am going to try this and know it is gonna be so yummy. My mom used to make chicken and gravy – nothing like this – but this is easier and I am sure will be more delicious than any I have even tasted. We oldsters never cease learning from you youngsters.

  24. What a sweet post! Thank you for sharing this delicious recipe! I look forward to making it for my sons and daughter-in-loves for Sunday dinner! Our Sunday dinners are such a joy…one of my favorite traditions!
