If you’re looking for southern soul food in Montgomery, there’s no need to go anywhere but The Davis Cafe.  Just outside of downtown Montgomery at 518 North Decatur Street, it’s not exactly where you’d look to find good food.  And from the looks of the outside of the place, you might even be a little reluctant, but trust me.  What waits on the inside is nothing short of pure southern delicacy.  It doesn’t get much more southern than this.  They can put a scald on a piece of chicken that will make the colonel run for the border.  I assure you, one bite of their delicious fried chicken and nothing will ever come close.  That’s not to say their other entree selections aren’t incredible… they are; especially the pot roast.  And don’t forget their delectable sides.  Depending on the day of the week and the season we’ve had everything there from turnip greens to collard greens, every kind of pea and bean I’ve ever heard of (and some I hadn’t), mashed potatoes, fried okra, squash… the list goes on and on.  And the cornbread… oh the cornbread.  I can’t even begin to tell you about the cornbread.

It may not look the best, it may not be in the best part of town, and if you can get past the little packets of lemon juice to put in your tea in lieu of real lemons… it’ll be worth the adventure.  I promise.  A few words of caution though:  The sweet tea is SWEET!  I always order half sweet/half unsweet to thin it out a little.  Also, the squash and dishes with cheese sauce can sometimes be a little gelatinous, so order with care.

Head over, try it out, and come back and let me know what you think about The Davis Cafe.  I love it!

  1. I agree. I have only been there once, but the candied yams were the best I have ever had.

  2. I love Davis Café. The service and food is great. My mother was a big fan of their banana pudding.
