Last month, my dear friends at Martha White invited to me to Nashville to participate in the taping of the CMA Country Christmas special. It was so exciting because we watch the special every year and this year, I’d get to be there when they tape it! It was neat too because this year it was taped at the amazing Grand Ole Opry. There’s just something magical about that place. And I’ll admit I’m a little smitten with one Miss Jennifer Nettles, so there was that. But with performances by stars like Kelsea Ballerini, Dan + Shay, Brett Eldredge, Mickey Guyton, Jewel, Charles Kelley, Martina McBride, David Nail, Nettles, Pentatonix, Thomas Rhett, LeAnn Rimes, Darius Rucker, Brian Setzer, Michael W. Smith, and Lindsey Stirling, how could it be bad, right? Well, that exactly right. It was incredible!
It was so fun to see the behind the scenes stuff when it comes to taping a show like this. It’s one thing to see the tv version, but it’s something entirely different to see all the pieces come together. The show may only be 2 hours, but it took more than 4 hours to tape. Being that it’s a recorded event, they have the advantage of being able to stop and restart to make sure things are perfect. There’s also got to be time for costume changes, set changes, and more. The coolest thing though about an event like this is getting to see so many talented people on one night.
The set was amazing and absolutely perfect for a Christmas event. All the lights and trees changed colors to fit the various songs. That background with the blue curtains was actually a huge screen that they could display nearly anything on. Make sure to watch for the amazing cathedral background during Martina McBride’s song!
Darius Rucker (or Hootie as he will always be known to me:)) performed several songs including one from his holiday album. Such a talented guy! He sounds just as amazing live as he does on his albums.
And can we take just a moment to praise some Hattie B’s Hot Chicken? Whew! As many times as I’ve been to Nashville, I’ve never been. Boy did I not know what I was missing. Be sure to hit this spot the next time yuo’re in Music City, just be prepared to wait. But it’s totally worth it, I promise. I had the white meat chicken with the “Hot” sauce with collard greens and pimento mac and cheese. There wasn’t a spec left except for bones. Ah-mazing!
Be sure to tune in tonight to join your favorite stars on “CMA Country Christmas” hosted by Jennifer Nettles TONIGHT at 9|8c on ABC.
