Ladies and gentlemen Mardi Gras is in full swing! Here at the Southern Bite that means that we are in the process of building a float, buying beads by the case and enjoying all the goodies that just don’t taste the same outside of the carnival season like King Cake and Hurricanes. And I am sure some of you fine folks have your parade routes printed and your hotel reservations made but for those of you who don’t here are some parades worth catching and an app that may make your parade wait a little shorter!
Have you ever been standing in the middle of Canal Street with a bag of beignets wondering when you are going to hear the blaring zydeco music announcing the next parade? Well wait no more – if you are heading to New Orleans for Mardi Gras then grab your smart phone and download the app “Experience Mardi Gras.” This app provides you with a parade tracker so you know where the beginning and end of the parades are, complete parade schedules, a Google Map of all parade routes, videos and a listing of events. I, giddy with the spirit of a child, have downloaded said app with the anticipation that maybe I will need to use it – cause if there is one thing this Southern Bite girl loves is standing in the middle of Canal Street with her best buds with a sack of beignets or a slice of King Cake!
So if you have your parade tracker downloaded you know that the magnificent parade known as the Endymion will be rolling through the streets of New Orleans on February 18th at 4:15 pm (CST). Now this is a parade that should not be missed! The Endymion Krewe got started parading in 1967 and by 1974 it was known as a “Super Krewe” because of its massive amount of floats and celebrity guests. This year’s guests include Grand Marshals Adam Levine and Maroon 5 with special guest riders Anderson Cooper and Big & Rich. The theme is “Happily Ever After” which includes floats depicting the Wizard of Oz, Shrek, The Little Mermaid and other fairytale characters. And let me just say there are no words I can use to do this event justice – it is just awesome and everyone should experience it!
Not going to New Orleans but still want to join in the revelry? Well come catch the Southern Bite Krewe on February 18th at the 8th Annual Prattville Mardi Gras Parade. This year’s theme is “Mardi Gras, Prattville Style” and Southern Bite is going to be letting the good times roll throwing beads, footballs and other goodies! The parade will roll out at 3pm but come enjoy some great food as vendors will be setting up at 1pm. The parade route can be found at www.prattvilleal.gov so check it out and come join us! Let me hear you say “Throw Me Something Mister!”
