Hey y’all we are back to beans in this week’s edition of the Southern Dish. So let’s get to getting because we have some navy beans, some pinto beans and even a little outhouse racing to kick off the first event post of October.
Rising Sun, Indiana, is home to the 24th Annual Rising Sun Navy Bean Festival held October 7th and 8th. This festival is two days of great food and fun for all ages. There is a Kid Zone with activities and shows including Radio Disney’s Road Crew. There is also a special afternoon planned for seniors that will feature live music, refreshments, square dancers, door prizes and bingo. And for every age in between there will be festival rides, live music, pageants and a festival parade with prizes for the best overall float, best float presentation by a youth group and most entertaining parade entry. Are you ready for some fun October 28th, 29th and 30th? Then head to the 28th Annual Arkansas Bean Fest and Arkansas Championship Outhouse Race in Mountain View, Arkansas. Come with an appetite for pinto beans and stay for the great music and laughs of the outhouse racing. This event has thousands gathering in this great little Arkansas town because there will be plenty of grub and a lot of fun for everyone. Got a pup – well be your fuzzy friend competes in the 4th Annual “Beanie Weenie Dog Show.” Got a love of music well be sure to hit the courthouse square where an offering of folk, bluegrass, Cajun and gospel music can be heard. Need a souvenir? Well they have that covered too – head to the Bean Fest Artisans Market on the Square with homemade wares from local and regional crafters And what about those beans? Saturday morning will bring thousands of pounds of Great Value pinto beans to be cooked on the sides of the court square. Noon will sound the dinner bell when cups of beans are served. Feeling lucky? Maybe while enjoying your beans you may be one of the special few who gets a piece of cornbread from the winning Martha White Cornbread Cook-off recipe – yummy cornbread and beans! So after a round of beans or two it is time for the Parade of Outhouses. Wheeled outhouses are outfitted with a steering device for the driver who is sitting on a potty seat will get a shove from two team pushers and the race will be on to see who has the fastest privy in the Ozarks!
