Alrighty folks it’s time to get clucking at the World Chicken Festival. This event has been voted as one of the Kentucky Tourism Council’s Top Ten Events; the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events and voted Best Festival in State by Kentucky Monthly Magazine.

The 22nd Annual World Chicken Festival will be held September 22nd through the 25th in London, Kentucky. One of Kentucky’s largest festivals this event is a tribute to Laurel County’s rich chicken heritage as it is home to Colonel Harland Sanders (founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken®)’s first and original restaurant. Colonel Sanders’s nephew Lee Cummings also began his career in Laurel County as co-founder of Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken.

There are plenty of reasons this festival ranks among the best but let’s start with the chicken! This fest will be serving up fried chicken dinners from the World’s Largest Stainless Steel Skillet. The skillet is 10 feet, 6 inches in diameter, 8 inches deep, has an 8 foot handle and weighs 700 pounds! This giant creation requires 300 gallons of cooking oil to fill and can cook 600 quarters of chicken at one time. So come hungry because there will be plenty of chicken for everyone!

The World Chicken Festival features tons of great family fun. There are three stages brimming with a great variety of entertainment. The Stage of Stars hosts the most popular musical performances and contests. The Sander’s Court Stage is a secondary stage featuring great music, dancers and contests. The third stage is The Kiddie World Stage which houses the Kid’s Day Circus and Magic Mike. There are also carnival rides for every age to enjoy. The World Chicken Festival Grand Parade will be rolling through on Saturday with a theme of “Something to Crow About.” A car show will also be a highlight event with antique cars, alongside a new generation of show cars and trucks, tuners, low riders and mini-trucks.

So after you have had a plate of chicken join in the excitement with some great contests. The Hot Wing Eating Contest; Karaoke Contest and don’t miss the Redneck Games (a “redneck” take on classic games) – watermelon/pumpkin seed spitting, Spam Eating Contest, Toilet Lid Horseshoe, Redneck Joke Competition, Armpit Serenade, Bobbing for Pig’s Feet, Burping Contest and Corn Shucking Contest. And there are also some special events for the little ones – The Chick-O-Lymipcs – kids get to compete in an Egg Hunt, Spoon Race, Egg Toss and Chicken Scratch.

And while you are in town enjoying all the festivities head over to the Colonel Sanders Museum where you can taste where Kentucky Fried Chicken ® got its start. The restored restaurant is the original kitchen where Colonel Sanders perfected his Famous Recipe®. You can enjoy your chicken in the original dining room and view the exhibits or partake in the convenient drive-thru window.
