A week or so ago, I got an email from the folks with TortillaLand asking if I might consider experimenting with and reviewing their Uncooked Flour Tortillas. Well, I honestly have little time to do these types of reviews, but I was intrigued by the uncooked tortilla deal. So, I decided to give them a whirl. Man was I surprised. So, here’s the deal… they’re not cooked, so they are refrigerated and you cook them up fresh. No worrying about reheating those precooked ones and them getting tough, just cook these fresh and you avoid that altogether. In addition to being a hot, fresh cooked tortilla, they’re also all natural and made with only 5 ingredients: wheat flour, water, canola oil, salt, and sugar. That’s it – nothing you can’t pronounce!
The instructions call for you to cook these in a non-stick pan for about 30 secs on each side. I, of course, pulled out my trusty cast iron skillet. It really did the trick. I cooked them over medium-high heat and watched for them to start to puff up, flipped them over for a little bit more and they were perfect. And trust me, a freshly cooked tortilla is so much more delicious!
Here are some fun ways to use this great product now that the kids are heading back to school.
For a departure from the same ol’ peanut butter and jelly sandwich, try this easy Ranch Turkey Wrap. Just take a freshly cooked tortilla, spread on some bottled ranch dressing, pile on some spring mix and some smoked turkey.
Know you know I couldn’t do a product review without doing something innately Southern, right? Try this Pimento Cheese Quesadilla! Smear some pimento cheese on a freshly cooked tortilla and return it to the pan, cooking until the cheese starts to melt. Yum!
Keeping with that theme, try this Elvis Quesadilla with peanut butter and banana. It’s a GREAT after-school snack packed with protein. Or try it for breakfast!
Or my favorite (of course my favorite would be something fried!), these easy Cinnamon Tortilla Crisps. Just slice the uncooked tortillas into strips with a pizza cutter and drop them into some hot oil. Cook until golden brown, remove from oil, and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar! My little guy LOVED these!
